EXTENSION TO FERNANDO DE NORONHA ISLAND

Brief description:

In 1988 approximately 70% of the archipelago was declared a National Marine Park , with the goal of preserving the land and marine environment. It is administered by the IBAMA. Towards its goal research projects are being developed, such as: recording native and migratory bird species both marine and land; studying the behavior and reproduction of the golfinho rotador stenella longirostris ; the ecology and reproduction of the crustaceans of the upper, middle and lower coast; shark research and the TAMAR PROJECT (marine turtles). These subjects are offered to the tourists each night at the visitor’s center of the project, nearby the headquarters of IBAMA.

Today Fernando de Noronha is a model of environmental preservation, existing side by side with small scale tourist activities, which are limited by the existing facilities. Permanent works built by the ONG's and Foundations, contribute to the perfecting of the conservational policies.

Avoid, if possible, visiting the Archipelago during the peak tourist season, principally between December 15 and February 28. Due to the limit of 420 visitors established by the local Administration, during this period the housing accommodations and flights are usually filled. The ideal length for a visit is 7 days or longer, permitting a better enjoyment of the Archipelago. The cost of the air fare is spread over a longer stay. Upon arrival the visitor is charged an Enviromental Preservation Tax, established by the government.

TUCANO AMAZON CRUISE

Visiting and exploring the Amazon tributaries in the Brazilian Amazon

9 days-8 nights

DAY 01 FRI DEPART USA for Manaus, Brazil:

Arrive and transfer to hotel Tropical. Balanced of day at leisure.

DAY  02 SAT MANAUS-AMAZON CRUISE

This morning  you will board the Amazon expedition boat The Tucano. After settling in our cabins we will depart upstream on the Rio Negro. Through the morning we will cruise through the world’s largest river island system, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. From the observation deck we will scan the magnificent tangle of vegetation at the water’s edge. Around midday we will have a presentation by our guides about the fascinating rainforest creatures that we will observe on the trip. (NOTE: Cruise departs about 7AM...please call Tara Tours to verified times...)

DAY 03 SUN CRUISE

Today, we will be beyond settlement and enter a wilderness area. Both shores will be covered by dense rainforest where all of the beasts for which the Amazon is famous still roam. The top Observation Deck is a great place to keep an eye out for wildlife. Though we never know what we will see, there is a good chance that we will see pink river dolphins and a large collection of exotic birds. We might also go for a swim is some of the world’s most clean and refreshing water. (BLD)

DAY 04 MON CRUISE

Early this morning we will explore the rainforest along the waters edge in our launches. We should hear and perhaps see howler monkeys and there should be a morning serenade of toucans along with a hundred other kinds of birds. After breakfast we will go for a walk in the forest where we will get a good start on understanding Amazon ecology. Around midday we will return to the boat and get underway, perhaps stopping at a place to swim. In the early afternoon we will explore the forest in our launches and listen to the sunset chorus of birds and frogs. This evening after dinner we may hunt for nocturnal wildlife and even catch a small caiman to examine closely. (BLD)

DAY 05 TUE CRUISE

We arrive at extraordinary river called the Rio Jauaperi and spend the day in this unspoiled and lovely rainforest area.

DAY 06 WED CRUISE

Today we proceed down the southwestern bank of the Rio Negro observing the different wildlife found on this side of the river. Our walks and explorations of the forest continue and our list of creatures observed gets larger and larger.

DAY 07 THU CRUISE

Today we visit the village of Novo Airão. We will walk through the streets and marvel at how the 19th Century thrives in this remote corner of the globe. We travel through the night to the confluence of the Amazon and Negro Rivers.

DAY 08 FRI CRUISE

This morning we visit the Lago Janauari Ecological Park where the thick brown water of the Amazon flows swiftly through the forest. This area is thick with life and we are almost guaranteed to see monkeys. We then travel to the “Encontra das Aguas” the stark several mile long line where the world’s two largest rivers, the Amazon and the Negro, join in a turbulent maelstrom. In the evening we will return to Manaus and overnight on the boat.

DAY 09 SAT CRUISE-MANAUS-USA

After breakfast passengers will disembark from the Tucano and in the afternoon or evening, transfer to the international airport.

Please note that the day to day schedule must be considered approximate. The exact order of the days and specific features may be altered due to navigational considerations.

Degree of Difficulty: Passengers must be able to get in and out of small boats and walk comfortably for up to two hours at a time in the forest.
