Daily departures

DAY 01  U.S.A-LIMA

Depart USA for Lima, Peru. (Overnight flight).

DAY 02  LIMA-CUZCO

Arrive very early morning in Lima. After going through customs and immigration, you will be met and walked to the domestic flight section of Lima airport for flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival in Cuzco you will be taken to hotel selected (see options below). Balance of day to rest and get used to the high altitude.

DAY 03  CUZCO

In the afternoon  enjoy a half day visit of the magical city of Cuzco as you drive through the main streets with their Inca walls. Visit the Qorikancha (Sun Temple) now referred to as Santo Domingo Church. The curved stonework of the temple is probably unequalled in the world. During the Inca period, the stones were covered with gold. The Cathedral, a real piece of art with hundreds of paintings. Then, visit the archaeological sites that surround Cusco: the Saqsayhuaman Fortress, an amazing site with huge stone constructions. The site has a great cosmic energy - that is why people think it was an astronomic observatory and an Inca oracle. Also visit Q’enqo, a place that was used for worship and ceremonial center and Tambomachay -the Inka Spa.  Overnite at hotel selected. (B)

DAY 04  CUZCO-MACHU PICCHU

Full day excursion by bus & train to the most mysterious and energetic place of the Inka civilization.

Early morning transfer to the rail station to board the train to Machu Picchu. The train journey to Machu Picchu is a highlight of any trip to the Andes.  The scenery is simply spectacular, and the recently refurbished Vistadome Trains with their panoramic windows allow you to enjoy it in comfort. The 3 hour journey takes you through a changing landscape, passing by lush, green fields and colourful villages in the foothills of the Andes.  From here on, there are wonderful vistas of the mountains and, deep in its dramatic canyon, the beautiful Urubamba River running through the Sacred Valley. For optimum views of the Andes, windows have been installed into the carriage ceilings.  Also, a newly enhanced food-and-drink service, plus individual slip-down tables have been added. And what a destination awaits you!  Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, is one of the wonders of the Americas.  On arrival in Machu Picchu, we transfer by small buses to the entrance of the ruins to commence our touring. Machu Picchu rises to an altitude of 7,900 ft. above sea level between the Huayna Picchu (young peak) and Machu Picchu (old peak). It lies within the spectacular framework provided by the exuberant vegetation of nearby jungle and the rugged landscape. The ruins are situated on the eastern slope of Machu Picchu in two different areas: the agricultural and the urban. The latter includes the civil sector (dwellings, canalizations), and the sacred sector (temples, mausoleums, squares, royal houses). Although constructions show different levels of architecture, religious buildings exhibit a high degree of perfection. The construction was with general use of stone, and the roofs were built of tree trunks and thatched with ichu straw. The walls were made with an inward inclination for protection against earthquakes. Overnight in the village of Aguas Calientes, just at bottom of Machu Picchu. (B)

DAY 05  MACHU PICCHU-CUZCO

Day at leisure to explore Machu Picchu on your own. You can go back to the Lost City and visit this magnificent archeological site at your own pace or do some trekking...or stay in Aguas Calientes and visit the local market or the thermal baths. Afternoon return to Cuzco by train with transfer to your hotel. (B)

DAY 06  CUZCO

At leisure. The city of Cuzco is like an open museum, wherever you go you will find ancient Inka streets, palaces, colonial mansions from the Spaniards conquistadores or  just take advantage of great bargains such as sweaters, ponchos, alpaca rugs, gold and silver jewelry....plenty of things to do and see.... From here the trail takes you on a 2-mile walk/or rickshaw ride through secondary forest, until we reach a small canal where we board canoes and are paddled 220 yards through a flooded forest of 100-foot tall Mauritia palms. As the canal opens onto the shimmering surface of the lake, we transfer to a catamaran and are leisurely paddled across half the lake to the lodge. After lunch and a brief rest to avoid the early afternoon heat, we once again board the catamaran and set off to explore the entire west end of the lake. Here, in the flooded palm forest we drift to the sounds of hundreds of Red-Bellied Macaws as they return to the palm forest for the night. We return to the lodge around nightfall for dinner.  (B,L,D)

DAY 06 AMAZON RAIN FOREST

A pre-dawn wake-up call will enable us to be on the lake for sunrise and a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters which frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. Most of the fish-eating water birds around the lake actively fish in the early morning as well, and this outing should provide excellent views, and photographs, of the prehistoric- looking Hoatzins.

After returning for a late breakfast we set off into the cool virgin forest near the lake to see some towering wild Brazil Nut trees and a demonstration of how our hosts collect, open and commercialize this important natural product.

After lunch and an hour or so to relax we once again board the catamaran to explore the eastern part of the lake, where we might see one or more of the five species of monkeys which live in the forest near the lake, such as the Brown Capuchin Monkey. (B,L,D)

DAY 07 AMAZON RAIN FOREST

Rising once again at dawn, we have a quick snack before boarding the catamarans to explore the western end of the lake in the hope of an Ecounter with Giant Otters.

After a late breakfast we explore some of the rain forest trails with our knowledgeable resident naturalist guide. As we walk the forest will be brought to life as your guide explains the ecology of the rain forest and its diverse flora and fauna.

We return for lunch, and then there is an optional rest for those who would like to escape the early afternoon heat. For those still full of energy, there is an option to independently explore some of the forest trails.

In the cooler late afternoon we will once again board the catamaran to explore the eastern end of the lake, and hopefully experience a spectacular sunset over the lake before returning to the lodge for dinner.  After dinner, there is a final chance to look for Black Caiman on the lake.... (B,L,D)

DAY 08- SANDOVAL-PUERTO MALDONADO-LIMA -USA

After a dawn breakfast we take a final, shorter paddle around the west end of the lake to try and glimpse the Giant Otters before returning to Puerto Maldonado to catch the flight to Lima.  Arrive in Lima and connect with your international flight. (B)

The fortress consist of a series of superimposed terraces of carved stone accessed by long staircases. The upper terrace contains large, admirably worked stone. It was here that Manco Inka fought the troops of Hernando Pizarro in 1537, leading a fierce resistance against the Spanish at command of a "General" Ollantay who continued for many years from Inca hideouts in the jungles of Vilcabamba. The highest point on the trek is a pass at 4,600 m (15,000 ft). At the pass we stop to take in views of snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range in every direction, the south face of Salkantay towering above us. We will keep our eyes out for Andean condors, often visible in this area. From the pass we continue our descent toward the Wayra Lodge (“Wayra”: wind; ‘the place where the wind lives’) our destination for the evening. A hot lunch is taken en route. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge. (Hiking time: 4-6 hours. Total excursion time for day: 5-7 hours. Hiking level: challenging with a 15,000 feet high pass.
DAY 06: HUAYRACCMACHAY to COLPA LODGE at COLLPAPAMPA (2,800m/9,200 ft).
Following the long first day we enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Wayra Lodge. We then begin our trek by hiking downhill above the Salkantay River, through increasingly verdant scenery. Our arrival at the next lodge encounters a “Pachamanca”-style lunch (subject to availability; traditional underground stone cooking). The Colpa Lodge is located in an open promontory at the confluence of three rivers. The outdoor hot tub in this lodge has prominent views of lush green mountains and a small, far-away, local town. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. (Hiking time: 3-4 hours. Hiking level: easy to moderate).
DAY 07: COLLPAPAMPA to LUCMA LODGE at LUCMABAMBA (2,100m/6,900 ft).
After an early breakfast we head down the Santa Teresa River Valley, through more populated rural areas with coffee plantations (said to be one of the best organic coffees in the world!), bananas, ‘granadillas’, and orchards. We stop along the river for a hot picnic lunch. After another hour of trekking a private vehicle arrives to take us to the beginning of the “Llactapata Inca Trail” (30-minute drive). From the head of the trail it is a short climb (30 min.) to the Lucma Lodge, set in an avocado orchard. We arrive in time to allow for exploration of the small village of Lucmabamba and possible meeting with members of the local community. (Hiking time: 5-6 hours. Total excursion time for day: 6-8 hours. Hiking level: moderate to challenging, basically due to distance, not terrain).

Day 08: LUCMABAMBA to AGUAS CALIENTES (1,900 m/6,200 ft).
After an early start and a hearty breakfast, we tackle the last day of our trek. We head uphill for 2-3 hours towards Llactapata pass (2,700 m/8,900ft), where we come upon a distant but quite special view of Machu Picchu from the southwest, a view few tourists ever glimpse; an added value are the Llactapata Ruins, which have recently been restored. Lunch is provided at the observatory, in view of Machu Picchu. We then begin our final descent to the Aobamba River through lush bamboo forests and more orchards and coffee plantations (2-3 hour descent). Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu are a short (30 minutes), scenic train ride away. (Total hiking time: 4-6 hours. Hiking level: moderate to challenging).
We then arrive in Aguas Calientes to check-in to our hotel for the night.
Day 09: Machu Picchu (2,450m/8,000 ft) to Cusco
We wake up early to have breakfast at the hotel and then make our way to the bus station for the ride up to Machu Picchu (30 min). A complete guided tour of Machu Picchu will be provided (2 hours). Guests will have about 4 additional hours to explore the site on their own (there is a lot to do and see). Afterwards, we will return by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch and to go to the train station for the afternoon departure. The train takes us to Ollantaytambo (1½ hrs), where a private vehicle awaits to take us to Cusco (1 ½ hrs). Upon arrival in Cusco (approximately 7-8pm) Transfer to hotel Novotel.

Formed by three successive walls of immense stones (the biggest one—28 feet high, 15 wide and 12 thick –must weigh some 360 tons.). The three walls are almost parallel. Forming a zig-zag, each supporting a terrace and parapet. The mind boggles at the thought of the effort that the building of this great monument must have cost men who did not have the wheel: the out side wall alone is 650 yards long. Above it stands a fortress as a defense against the primitive inhabitants of the hot valleys of the "Antis" or jungle Indians. The fortress consist of a series of superimposed terraces of carved stone accessed by long staircases. The upper terrace contains large, admirably worked stone. It was here that Manco Inca fought the troops of Hernando Pizarro in 1537, leading a fierce resistance against the Spanish at command of a "General" Ollantay who continued for many years from Inca hideouts in the jungles of Vilcabamba. You have to climb to visit the upper part, where six enormous stones (each weighing some 50 tons) stand upright. Return to Cuzco late afternoon. Hotel Dorado (B,L)

DAY 07 MON. Yanallpa – Dorado River
06:00 am. Breakfast – Buffet
Dawn and dusk are ideal times for nature observation, and an early rise is therefore highly recommended.
07:00 am. Yanallpa exploration, Belluda Stream or Jungle walks
Rainy Season (Dec – May) Belluda Stream exploration.
Aboard the skiffs, we will explore this black water stream and start learning about the rainforest. You are now in the Pacaya-Samiria national reserve, where you will have the chance to see its amazing wildlife. From the skiff you can easily spot parrots, macaws and monkeys, such as the monk Saki monkey with its gray and black body, naked face and long shaggy tail. You might also see the saddle-back tamarin monkey, whose high chirping notes can easily be confused with those of a flock of birds. It’s also a good spot to see the beautiful morpho butterfly. Different species of hawks will also be found.
During dry Season (Jun – Nov) Hiking at the community of Yanallpa
Here you will explore two different kinds of ecosystems: flooded forest and terra firme forest. After disembarking at this native village, we’ll start our morning hike. This walk affords excellent opportunities for spotting transitional species such as the snail kite, black tailed ant bird, manikins, tanagers, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, nun birds, orioles, blackbirds, etc.
After an hour we’ll reach a lovely lagoon where two dugout canoes await us in the midst of one of the most remote, least visited areas in the world. This lagoon is filled with endangered and unique fresh water fish, such as the paiche, the largest in the Amazon basin, which can weigh more than 80kg (170 lbs). We’ll also look for the peculiar crested hoatzin bird with its olive-colored plumage.
We will then hike back to the skiffs, where icy towels will refresh us, while we continue exploring the surrounding wildlife. There’s a good chance of spotting the smallest monkey in the world, the pygmy marmoset, seen only at its sap-sucking sites low on tree trunks.
11:00 am. Back to the boat and continue upstream.
12:30 pm. Lunch
After emerging from the depths of the forest, you’ll be treated to a world-class gourmet meal.
Our young and innovative chef will surprise your sophisticated palates, while introducing you to the pleasures of Peru´s haute cuisine. The gourmet menu has been designed especially to please you. The menu features glorious fresh fish and other local delicacies, all prepared with an Amazonian flair and our personal touch.
03:30 pm. El Dorado River exploration
We will head for this spectacular spot within the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve In the skiffs, where you will also experience an unforgettable encounter with gray and pink river dolphins. Enjoy a unique opportunity to swim among the dolphins.
On the river you will experience abundant wildlife and nature in all of its exuberance while we search for the Amazon river’s transitional forest specialties such as snail kites, festive parrots, endangered scarlet macaws, olive spotted hummingbirds, Amazonian parrots, wood creepers, among others.
Prehistoric looking iguanas laze in the sun while we travel along the shoreline searching for whatever the jungle has to offer us. Squirrel Monkeys are very active at this time of the day, when they move in large noisy troops at mid- to upper-levels of primary and secondary lowland forest.
08:00 pm. Dinner
The service continues. Desserts are also a wonderful treat on our menu. (B,L,D)

DAY 08 TUE. Pacaya River – Atun Poza Lagoon
05:30 am. Wake up call
This morning we will start very early and breakfast on board the skiffs, in order to see as much wildlife as possible in one of the earth´s greatest wilderness.
06:00 am. Rio Pacaya – breakfast on board
We have reached our main goal, the Pacaya River, the very heart of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, Peru’s largest protected area with a mean annual rainfall of nearly 3,000mm, by far the largest protected wetland reserve in the world.
Filled with lakes, palm swamps and streams, the reserve becomes a flooded forest in the rainy season and is one of the most beautiful places you have ever visited.
An early rise is very rewarding: you’ll see parrots, macaws, toucans, kingfishers, black collared hawks, southern swallows, white winged swallows, and manikins. Aside from the large variety of birds, you’ll also see troops of squirrel monkeys.
Aboard our comfortable skiffs, we will go in search of magnificent views and wildlife opportunities, experiencing spectacular rainforest wilderness, while searching for different species of monkeys, such as small family groups of red howler monkeys, the largest in the Amazon basin, with its bright rust-colored fur and long prehensile tail.
Breakfast—cold, fresh fruit juice, fresh fruit and light sandwiches with coffee and/or tea—will be served as we float amidst a favored dolphin feeding spot.
After breakfast, you can jump in the water for a very refreshing morning swim, a once in a lifetime experience in the beautiful setting of dark, clean and warm water, deep blue skies, and a light breeze, just a perfect moment to enjoy the wild and unique Amazon rainforest at its best.
11:30 am. Back to the Boat
We will start navigating back down the Puinahua River towards Nauta.
12:30 pm. Lunch
Another sophisticated meal and a well balanced menu. There’s also time for dessert. Coffee will be served at the bar on the Observation deck.
04:00 pm. Atun Poza expedition
Rainy Season (Dec – May) Atun Poza by skiff: On our adventure this afternoon we will cruise in our skiffs along a lake called Atun Poza, where we will surprise several species of egrets, herons, hawks, long-legged neotropical cormorants fishing for their dinner, and unusual and loud horned screamers. We will also have a chance to explore other black water lagoons linked to this huge lake, where wattled jacanas compete with a wide variety of spiders, grasshoppers, dragonflies, butterflies, moths, beetles, etc. living along the grassy edges and lily pads of freshwater swamps and marshes.
Dry Season (Jun – Nov) hiking at Atun Poza: This afternoon we will hike through this pristine and unique ecosystem, passing through a classic tropical rainforest with emergent trees and canopy trees reaching up to 55 mts. in height. Many trees have buttress roots which often extend high up the trunks while palms are abundant and many of them have stilt roots. Biologically, this kind of forest is probably one of the richest habitats on earth, supporting the most species of plants and animals per unit area. Our target is the giant ceiba or kapok tree with its large diameter. If we’re lucky we’ll also see giant otters with their large bodies, dark fur with spotted throat and noisy calls. They nest by a small stream inside this forest, but we must be very quiet, because if they hear us they will swim away. This forest is also very good for spotting birds such as the bluish-fronted jacamar seen in pairs in middle and lower parts of forest edges, or collared trogons, red-capped cardinals, etc.
06:30 pm. Back to the vessel
07:00 pm. Briefing and review
At this time our guides will review all that we have seen and learned, with the help of videos and a slide show on our flat TV. This will give you the chance to see up close the birds, monkeys, reptiles, etc. This is the time to clear up any doubts. We will sail all night long as the Delfin continues its smooth journey downstream.. Coffee and tea are always available.
08:00 pm. Farewell Dinner –
Leaving behind the wildlife, you will continue enjoying our service as a world class traveler deserves. Tonight our chef and kitchen staff will treat you to a grilled dinner, including fresh salads, grilled vegetables, magical sauces, and wonderful combinations of different types of meat. Our talented staff will delight you with some live music before you retire.
DAY 09 WED Yarapa River – Puerto Miguel Village – Nauta
07:00 am. Breakfast – Buffet
08:00 am. Yarapa River Exploration and Puerto Miguel Village Visit
On board our skiffs we will stop at the village of Puerto Miguel to meet local villagers. You will have the chance to learn about their culture, traditions and folklore. You may also visit one of the villager’s homes, to see how they live and the simplicity of their lifestyle and purchase some of the handcrafts they make.
After visiting the village, we will explore the Yarapa river, where there’s a good chance that you’ll see squirrel and capuchin monkeys, herons, egrets and green iguanas. We will reach a beautiful lagoon called Uvos to look for pin river dolphins. Monkeys love these surroundings.
11:00 am. Back to the vessel: We will continue sailing downstream to the confluence of the Ucayali and the Marañon, birthplace of the Amazon River. Dolphins delight in this special setting.

EXTENSION TO HEATH RIVER WILDLIFE CENTER

Rainforest and Savannah

4 days/3 nights program
Departs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Fridays
Day 1 - Puerto Maldonado to Heath River Wildlife Center
We meet at the Puerto Maldonado airport and drive through town to the Tambopata River port. After boarding motorized canoes, we travel downriver to the mighty Madre de Dios, which we follow for approximately four hours to the Heath River. We then travel up this wild and intimate river, which forms the wilderness border between Peru and Bolivia, and arrive at the Heath River Wildlife Center. Note that the Lodge is located on the Bolivian side of the Heath River so passports are required to clear Bolivian passport control. (L, D).

Day 2 - Heath River Wildlife Center
We rise early in the morning to board a motorized canoe for the 10-minute journey up the Heath River to the macaw and parrot clay lick. Brightly-colored parrots and macaws fly in by the hundreds to feed on the clay that detoxifies certain seeds and nuts they eat. Marvel at the cacophony of sound and color as Red-and-green macaws vie for the best clay-eating position. A specially-designed floating blind allows for proximity and complete concealment -- so you can even have breakfast and coffee while the birds are performing their morning ritual.

When we return to the lodge, the guide leads us on an ethno-botanical walk through the forest, pointing out flora used in the daily lives of rainforest people. The guide explains how certain plants are used for medicinal or healing purposes, which ones can be made into the best bows and arrows, and how to select trees and leaves for home construction.
After lunch and a short rest, we hike through the rainforest to the Pampas del Heath, the largest remaining undisturbed savanna in the Amazon. The contrast is striking as we emerge from the mature rainforest onto the grassland plain of the Pampas. (B, L, D)

Day 3 - Heath River Wildlife Center
We breakfast in the floating blind at the macaw and parrot clay lick for a last round of looks and photos. Then we return to the lodge to explore some trails.
After lunch we could visit the Ese'Eja native community of Sonene, where there will be an opportunity to interact with the community and purchase local handicrafts or explore the trails.

Day 02  Saturday : Lima-Iquitos-Amazon River
Transfer to the airport for flight to Iquitos. Arrive in Iquitos and transfer to your luxury 12-suite expedition vessel, M/V Aqua, your home for the next four or eight days. Check into your luxurious, oversized suite, and as you settle in, your ship
will start its journey toward the Yarapa River, an estuary of the Amazon. You are embarking on a spectacular
adventure, to a place visited by only a few of even the most experienced world travelers. Your days in this hidden part of the world will be a dramatic study in contrasts. Imagine seeing rare howler
monkeys and pink dolphins and harpy eagles (not to mention exotic six-foot-wide water lily pads) by day, and then returning to exquisite gourmet meals, paired with some of the finest wines from all of South America. In the evening, you may go on another expedition, or you may simply want to sit out on the top deck, sip a Pisco sour, and count the stars. The choices are yours. B,D)
Day 03 Sunday : Yanayacu/Yarapa River
Wake up on the Yanayacu River, throw open your curtains, and you may well see a great snowy egret, white against the green of the jungle. Keep your binoculars with you on your early morning bird watching excursion, to catch sight of russet and blue tiger herons, vivid masked crimson tanagers, graceful storks, blue and yellow macaws, and black-headed parrots . . . just some of the 250 species of birds that you will spot as you glide along the river. In the afternoon, you will board the ship’s small skiffs and float to Corriente Lake, where you will have the oncein- a-lifetime chance to fish for freshwater red-bellied, black, white, and purple piranha. The fishing is good year round, but is spectacular in the dry season. Amazonia is home to more than 2,700 species of fish . . . more than can be found in all of the Atlantic Ocean.  Later that day, we will visit the small village of San Juan del Amazonas, where some 80 descendants of the famed Cocama Indians still live in thatched stilt houses, carrying on their tribe’s traditions and earning their living by fishing.
That evening, sip a sundowner with your new friends, as you watch the sun set over the mighty Amazon River. After dinner, your naturalist guides will take you on a night excursion to find caimans, frogs, tarantulas, bats... (B,L,D)

These handsome animals were killed in great numbers for their pelts, and are now threatened with extinction. On this excursion, you will also see howler and capuchin monkeys, the squirrelsized monkeys called tamarins, pink and gray river dolphins, and a vast variety of birds.
Option 2: Guided Jungle Walk/Siesta/Monkey and Dolphin Expedition –

This morning your Park Ranger will tell
you all about sustainable resource management projects in Amazonia, and will take you to visit one of the projects, where villagers are planting palms to obtain oil. The ranger may also show you the artificial nests created on the sand to protect turtle eggs. After lunch and a siesta, your naturalist guide will take you on a Monkey and Dolphin Expedition. You are likely to see all four of the most common species of freshwater dolphins—including the unusual pink ones—found in the Amazon. Later, keep your eyes directed toward the jungle canopy, where you can spot at least 10 of the 13 species of monkeys resident in the National Park, including tamarins and howler, woolly, and pigmy marmoset monkeys. Watch for alligators, and keep your binoculars at the ready, as you are likely to see more than 200
species of birds. After sundowners on the top deck, dinner, and an optional night excursion, the M/V Aqua will set sail toward Nauta Caño. (B,L,D)
Day 05 Tuesday : Birthplace of the Amazon/Nauta Caño/Ucayali River and Puerto Miguel
Today, the M/V Aqua skirts the edges of the vast Pacaya Samiria Reserve, a flooded forest covering five million acres at the headwaters of the Amazon basin. Rise early and be on your skiffs at 5:30 a.m. to view one of the great spectacles of the Southern Hemisphere: the sun rising over the birthplace of the Amazon River.
Here—where the union of two major tributaries, the Ucayali and the Marañon, form the world’s greatest waterway—nature is at its most dramatic. Your dawn excursion will be accompanied by abundant bird song, as you glide in small boats past river banks populated by large-billed terns, laughing falcons, gray tanagers, sandpipers, five kinds of parakeets, the exotic short-tailed parrot, and dozens of other birds.
A post-breakfast excursion to Nauta Caño takes you into a wilderness populated by squirrel monkeys, saddleback and black mantle tamarins, iguanas, tagu lizards, and an abundance of tropical birds. After lunch, our three-night passengers depart for the journey back to Iquitos Airport, and a new group arrives. Those doing the full seven-night journey will depart on the Ucayali River Excursion, to visit Puerto Miguel village.(B,L,D)
Day 06 Wednesday : Tapiche River/El Sapote Creek
Today begins with an early morning journey via skiff along the remote Tapiche River, to search for the magnificent, 3 1/2-feet-long harpy eagles. Chances are good that you will also see umbrella birds, tanagers, stern looking chachalacas, puff birds, and more on this expedition into the deep wilderness. After breakfast, it’s time for piranha fishing on the Tapiche (where they are bigger than elsewhere). Other options: curl up with a good book in your spacious cabin or on the Observation Deck. As you sail along, you will catch wonderful glimpses of life along the river . . . fishermen paddling along on canoes made from tree trunks . . . children waving from riverside villages.(B,L,D)
Day 07 Thusday : Pacaya Samiria Reserve
Today is devoted to a full-day excursion into the wildlife-rich Pacaya Samiria Reserve, so vast that it is the size of some Central American countries. Traveling into the reserve in small boats, you will enter the black water lakes collectively known as the Mirrored Forest, where you will view the almost magical reflection of the towering trees in the glistening water. In addition to the birds, caimans, monkeys, and dolphins of the Amazon jungle, you will also see a rich array of flowers in a riot of colors. In the wet season, as the water level rises, it is possible to travel deeper into the reserve, exploring its farthest reaches. In the dry season, you can spot turtles, and the massive jabiru—pink storks standing five feet tall, with nine-foot wingspans. After dinner, those who choose to go out on the skiffs will have a chance to experience the nightlife along the river—an intimidating array of yellow-crowned brush-tailed bats, fishing bats, snakes, frogs, and tarantulas. Finally, spend a little end-of-day relaxation time in an oversized lounge on the Observation Deck, experiencing the deep darkness of the Amazon night and listening to the ever-changing sounds of the jungle. Then it’s time to head off to your ultra- comfortable bed.(B,L,D)
Day 08 Friday : Ucayali/Amazon River/Sapo Playa/ “Jurassic Park”
The day begins with a cruise down the Ucayali and Amazon Rivers. We make a stop to visit the small, banana growing village of Sapo Playa, where you will need items—t-shirts or school supplies—to barter for purchases. These friendly people are eager hosts. You will have a delightful time with them and will get some great photographs. Later that day and early evening, we will visit “Jurassic Park,” a prehistoric-looking swamp where the giant, sixfoot in diameter lily pads grow. Here, during the wet season, you will also have the chance to visit lovely Chontilla Lake, rich with monkeys, birds, and dolphins. An optional night expedition lets you view the massive water lilies again, and gives you a good view of bats and night birds. Then it’s back to the ship, which sails toward the Tahuayo River.(B,L,D)
Day 09 Saturday : Tahuayo River/Iquitos Tour/
Wake up for an early morning excursion on the Tahuayo River, to capture your last sunrise photos. The morning light is a perfect time to snap pictures of the rare pink dolphins, terns, and parrots. You will also have another chance to see the famous, giant, six-foot-wide Victoria Regia lily pads. Then, transfer to the airport for flight to Lima and connection to Miami. adventure, to a place visited by only a few of even the most experienced world travelers.
