This part of northern patagonia coastline is inhabited by marine mammals, like sea lions, elephant seals and fur seals. Southern right whales can be found in Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José, protected bodies of water located between the peninsula and the Patagonian mainland. These baleen whales come here between May and December, for mating and giving birth, because the water in the gulf is quieter and warmer than in the open sea. Orcas can be found off the coast, in the open sea off the peninsula. In this area, they are known to beach themselves on shore to capture sea lions and elephant seals.
The inner part of the peninsula is inhabited by rheas, guanacos and maras. A high diversity and range of birds live in the peninsula as well; at least 181 bird species, 66 of which migratory, live in the area, including the Antarctic pigeon. (B)

DAY 05 PENINSULA VALDEZ-PUNTA TOMBO:
Full day excursion to Punta Tombo to enjoy its Penguin rookery (Magellan) . Punta Tombo is the most important Magellan Penguins colony within continental Patagonia. More than a million of them arrive at this place every year in order to breed.

From July to November sperm, killer and other whales can be observed playing, fighting and reproducing at Golfo Nuevo (Puerto Madryn) (B)

DAY 06 PENINSULA VALDEZ:
This morning will depart to Puerto Piramides, where we take a the Yellow Submarine to do whale watching of Southern Right Whales (Eubalaena australis) from June 15 to December 15, and of Southern Sea lions (Otaria flavescens) and cormorants between January and March.
Unlike the conventional watching service, the semi-submersible submarine Yellow Submarine allows us to watch whales submersed in their environment. Underwater, the perspective looks completely different, which is comparable only to the experience of diving among them. While they remain close to the vessel, we watch them all the time through the 40 viewing windows on the lower deck. On board, passengers can walk around at their pleasure on the submersed lower deck, or on the outdoor upper deck and watch the whales from the surface of the water, as a conventional watching....... (B)

NOTE: From Dec 15 to Mar 30 we will observe the beautiful Toninas (black and white Dolphins) playing in this area...

PATAGONIA - EL CHALTEN

 Argentina Chalten vacation packages

El Chalten is located in Lago Argentino Department, on the northern margin of Lago Viedma, at the confluence of Río de las Vueltas and Río Fitz Roy, in the Reserva Nacional Zona Viedma of Los Glaciares National Park.
El Chaltén was founded in this place for geopolitical reasons. The town was set inside the one hundred hectares of protected area assigned to this issue.
Originally, the name of “Chaltén” which means “blue mountain” or “smoking mountain”-, was given by the tehuelches (former inhabitants of southern continental Patagonia) to the famous Mount Fitz Roy for its unmistakable and magnificent silhouette always covered by a cloud, which made them think of smoke.
The breathtaking natural wonders give life to this young tourist village, which is becoming
the new World Trekking Mecca

Transfer to the airport for flight to Ushuaia. Arrive and immediate check-in with the cruise company . Check in at 409 San Martín Ave. in downtown Ushuaia between 10:00 and 17:00 (10 AM-5 PM) on the day of your cruise departure. Board the M/V Ventus Australis at 18:00 (6 PM). After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the most remote corners of planet Earth. During the night we traverse the Beagle Channel and cross from Argentina into Chilean territorial waters. The lights of Ushuaia disappear as we turn into the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands.

DAY 3 CRUISE Cape Horn-Wulaia
Around the break of dawn, Stella Australis crosses Nassau Bay and enters the remote archipelago that comprises Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we shall go ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition -- and named after the town of Hoorn in West Friesland -- Cape Horn is a sheer 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic, and was often referred to as the "End of the Earth." The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument (currently awaiting repair after being damaged by fierce winds).

Sailing back across Nassau Bay, we anchor at fabled Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station -- which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area -- passengers have a choice of three hikes (of increasing degrees of difficulty) that ascend the heavily wooded mountain behind the bay. On all of these you stroll through an enchanted Magellanic forest of lengas, coigües, canelos and ferns to reach panoramic viewpoints overlooking the bay. (B,L,D)

DAY 4  CRUISE PIA GLACIER & GARIBALDI

We continue our Patagonia glacier tour around the western end of Tierra del Fuego via the very narrow Gabrial Channel, Magdalena Channel and Cockburn Channel. After rounding the remote Brecknock Peninsula, Ventus Australis tacks eastward and enters the Beagle Channel again. By morning we are entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a shore excursion to Pia Glacier. After disembarking we take a short hike to gain a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier, which extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier.
No one knows for certain how the hulking mass of snow and ice got its feminine moniker, but one theory says it was named for Princess Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911), daughter of the Italian king.
Making our way further west along the Beagle Channel, we enter another long fjord and drop anchor near Garibaldi Glacier for another shore excursion. Garibaldi is one of only three glaciers in Patagonia gaining mass rather than staying the same or slowly shrinking. This time we hike through virgin Magellanic forest to a glacial waterfall, a towering wall of ferns and moss, and spectacular viewpoints looking down on the glacier and fjord. The walk is demanding -- very steep, negligible trail, rough footing -- and not for everyone. For those who choose to stay onboard, our captain will point the bow towards the beautiful sky blue Garibaldi Glacier so everyone can enjoy the panoramic view from the upper decks.  .  (B,L,D)

DAY 5 CRUISE Agostini Sound – Águila Glacier – Cóndor Glacier
Early in the morning, we will sail through the Cockburn Channel and enter Agostini Sound. From there it is possible to see the glaciers that descend from the middle of the Darwin Mountain Range -- some of them reaching the water. This morning, we will disembark and go for an easy walk around a lagoon, which was formed by the melting of the Águila Glacier. We will reach a spot right in front of that glacier with stunning views. In the afternoon, we will approach the Condor Glacier via Zodiac -- and hopefully see some of the abundant Andean Condors in the area.(B,L,D)

DAY 6  CRUISE-MAGDALENA ISLAND-PUNTA ARENAS
Early in the morning, we will disembark on Magdalena Island, the home of an immense colony of more than 120,000 Magellanic Penguins that we will be able to observe during our walk to the Lighthouse that guides different ships on their way through the Strait of Magellan. After our visit, the vessel will cruise towards Punta Arenas, disembarking about 11:30 a.m. (B)

Transfer to the airport for flight to Punta Arenas and immediate connection to Santiago.

Arrive in Santiago and transfer to hotel PULLMAN EL BOSQUE (B)

DAY 7 SANTIAGO

Tour of Panoramic Santiago- The excursion begins by touring the main avenues in the city’s civic center. Highlights include La Moneda Palace, which was completed in 1805 (after more than 20 years of off-and-on construction). The neoclassical building was the home of Chilean presidents until 1958, and today is the seat of the government. Continue exploring narrow streets, eventually arriving at the Plaza de Armas, a picturesque square surrounded by the 18th-century Cathedral Metropolitana, the National Historical Museum, and the central post office. Leaving downtown, head toward Parque Forestal, which leads to the Fine Arts Museum, and Bellavista, the artsy, bohemian center of Santiago? Ascend Santa San Cristóbal, a beautiful public park whose peak—the perfect place for a panoramic shot of the city—is crowned with a 118-foot statue of the Virgin Mary. Descend and travel the other direction to the neighborhoods of Pedro de Valdivia Norte, Las Condes and Vitacura, the modern commercial districts and great places for shopping. Return to your hotel.  (B)
