Machu Picchu rises to an altitude of 7,900 ft. above sea level between the Huayna Picchu (young peak) and Machu Picchu (old peak). It lies within the spectacular framework provided by the exuberant vegetation of nearby jungle and the rugged landscape. The ruins are situated on the eastern slope of Machu Picchu in two different areas: the agricultural and the urban. The latter includes the civil sector (dwellings, canalizations), and the sacred sector (temples, mausoleums, squares, royal houses). Although constructions show different levels of architecture, religious buildings exhibit a high degree of perfection. The construction was with general use of stone, and the roofs were built of tree trunks and thatched with ichu straw. The walls were made with an inward inclination for protection against earthquakes. Overnight in the village of Aguas Calientes, just at bottom of Machu Picchu.

Lunch at the Sanctuary Machu Picchu today. (B,L)

DAY 05  MACHU PICCHU-CUZCO

Day at leisure to explore Machu Picchu on your own. You can go back to the Lost City and visit this magnificent archeological site at your own pace or do some trekking...or stay in Aguas Calientes and visit the local market or the thermal baths. Afternoon return to Cuzco by train with transfer to your hotel. (B)

DAY 06  CUZCO

At leisure. The city of Cuzco is like an open museum, wherever you go you will find ancient Inka streets, palaces, colonial mansions from the Spaniards conquistadores or  just take advantage of great bargains such as sweaters, ponchos, alpaca rugs, gold and silver jewelry....plenty of things to do and see.... (B).

DAY 07  CUZCO-PUERTO MALDONADO-AMAZON RAINFOREST

Transfer to the airport. Arrive and transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the river port on the Madre de Dios River. A 25 minutes journey down the Madre de Dios River by motor canoe brings you to the end of the trail in to Sandoval Lake Lodge (see rates with Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica). From here the trail takes you on a 2-mile walk/or rickshaw ride through secondary forest, until we reach a small canal where we board canoes and are paddled 220 yards through a flooded forest of 100-foot tall Mauritia palms. As the canal opens onto the shimmering surface of the lake, we transfer to a catamaran and are leisurely paddled across half the lake to the lodge. After lunch and a brief rest to avoid the early afternoon heat, we once again board the catamaran and set off to explore the entire west end of the lake. Here, in the flooded palm forest we drift to the sounds of hundreds of Red-Bellied Macaws as they return to the palm forest for the night. We return to the lodge around nightfall for dinner. After dinner we will return to the canoes to look for the large and extremely rare Black Caimans. If it is a clear starlit night, we will also be able to float in the middle of the lake and marvel at the brillance of the sky. (B,L,D)

DAY 08 AMAZON RAINFOREST

A pre-dawn wake-up call will enable us to be on the lake for sunrise and a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters which frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. Most of the fish-eating water birds around the lake actively fish in the early morning as well, and this outing should provide excellent views, and photographs, of the prehistoric- looking Hoatzins. After returning for a late breakfast we set off into the cool understory of the tall virgin forest near the lake to see some towering wild Brazil Nut trees and a demonstration of how our hosts collect, open and commercialize this important natural product. After lunch and an hour or so to relax we once again board the catamaran to explore the eastern part of the lake, where we might see one or more of the five species of monkeys which live in the forest near the lake, such as the Brown Capuchin Monkey. ((B,L,D)

DAY 09 AMAZON RAIN FOREST-P.MALDONADO-LIMA-USA

After a dawn breakfast we take a final, shorter paddle around the west end of the lake to try and glimpse the Giant Otters before returning to Puerto Maldonado to catch the flight to Lima. Arrive in Lima and connect with your international flight back to USA. (B)

DAY 04 TUE. AMAZON CRUISE MARAÑON RIVER/CHOROYACU/PACAYA SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE
7:00 a.m. Breakfast
8:00 a.m. Boat Ride Expedition
This morning we will board the skiffs to explore part of the vast Amazon flooded forest. Your guides will tell you about the rainforest and its dynamic life, as we explore what scientists call a “gallery forest,” because of its narrow vegetation, creating a tunnel of leaves. As we float through this tunnel, it is easy to spot parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys, very close to the skiff.
12:30 p.m. Lunch
4:00 p.m. Jungle Walk and Village Visit
On this walk, your guides will introduce you to native people doing subsistence farming, and will tell you how they learned to cultivate wild plants and trees to earn farm income. As your adventure takes you deep into the primary forest, your guides will also show you the wealth of fruit trees and medicinal plants hidden in the jungle – and will reveal some of the plants’ secrets.
8:00 p.m. Dinner  (BB, L & D)

DAY 05 WED. AMAZON CRUISE – TACSHA RIVER/PACAYA SAMIRIA/SAN MARTIN DE TIPISHCA
6:30 a.m. Breakfast
7:30 a.m. Guided Jungle Walk in the Primary Forest
This morning your Naturalist Guide will tell you all about sustainable resource management projects in Amazonia, and will take you to one of these projects, where villagers are planting palms to obtain oil. Your Guide may also show you the artificial nests created on the sand to protect turtle eggs. Then we will take you deep into the jungle, where you will encounter wildlife and learn first-hand about the important medicinal value of many jungle plants. We will also show you famous Kapok Trees (ceiba pentandra), the tallest trees in the Amazon Basin.
1:00 p.m. Lunch, followed by a Siesta
4:00 p.m. Caiman Expedition
In this late afternoon skiff excursion, keep your eyes directed toward the jungle canopy, where you can spot at least several kinds of primates—some of the 13 species of monkeys resident in the National Reserve. Perhaps you will catch a glimpse of tamarins and dusky titi monkeys, as well as pigmy marmoset monkeys. Watch for alligators, and keep your binoculars at the ready, as you are likely to see more than 200 species of birds. As the sun sets and our searchlight comes on, keep your eyes out for caimans, tree boas, tarantulas, and frogs.
8:30 p.m. Dinner (BB, L & D)

DAY 06 THU.  AMAZON CRUISE

YANAYAQUILLO/TAHUAYO/CHARO LAKE
6:30 a.m. Yanayaquillo Exploration and Breakfast Aboard the Skiffs
Back on the river as the sun rises, you will see a treasure trove of wildlife, including parrots, macaws, toucans, and many kinds of monkeys—as well as some “surprise” species that you have never seen before. Enjoy a “bag breakfast” of light sandwiches and fresh juice. Since we will stop near a popular dolphin feeding spot, you will see quite a show as you enjoy your meal.
As our journey nears its end, your luxurious home away from home starts to sail back down the river toward Iquitos. It isn’t over yet however. A new adventure awaits you this afternoon.
12:30 p.m. Lunch
3:30 p.m. Charo Lake Fishing Trip
This afternoon, we will travel to this splendid “hot spot” lake, where you will be certain to catch some of the more than 3,000 species of tropical fish that live in the Amazon basin. Our key focus will be on piranhas, those small, sharp-teethed carnivorous fish with a big reputation for being scary. Catching one will make for great cocktail conversation back home.
Once we are back onboard, the ship will continue its journey down stream, sailing toward Iquitos through the night.
7:00 p.m. Briefing in the Top Lounge - Recap of Itinerary and Sightings.
8:00 p.m. Farewell Dinner
Leaving the peace and beauty of the jungle behind, we will enjoy our final dinner together, swapping stories about the wonderful experiences shared on the river.
9:00 p.m. Crew Presentation
After dinner, your guides will introduce some of the crew members that you have not yet met, but who have been busy with the “behind the scenes” work that has helped to create a seamless experience.

ABANCAY-CHALLWANKA 127 KMS /79 MILES)
Depart hotel, with a private tour guide, at mid-morning by private vehicle to start this unforgettable 5 day journey from the Andes to the Pacific on the brand new Interoceanic Highway. First, we visit the Zurite archeological complex, which boasts the largest group of terraced hills fashioned by the Incas as well as an exceptional view of Condorwachana Sacred hill and great views of Anta Pampa. Then, we will stop at Killarumiyoc (Temple of the Moon) and walk around its incredible buildings. The view of Mount Salkantay (apu or guardian spirit), with its green valleys and mighty rivers, is simply spectacular. The road passes through the town of Limatambo, but we continue on to Tarawasi, with an Incan temple and stones shaped like flowers. The road now follows the Apurimac River, and at one point we will exit the bus and hike for an hour in order to appreciate to their fullest the Andes, its rivers, rocky canyons, and surrounding countryside, and of course take the best pictures. We will observe the change in vegetation, from orchids and cantutas (Peru’s national flower) to passionflowers, native trees, etc., while crossing into different habitats. We eat picnic lunch with great andean landscape and continue travelling along the Pachachaka river until arriving at Challwanka, where will stay the night at the brand new Tampumayo Lodge.

Day 2 CHALLWANKA-NAZCA 213 miles- 340 kms    Max altitude 13,566 ft – 4,200 m  Driving 8 h -  Several stops

After breakfast, we take a brief stop at the Challwanka Market. Later, we visit Caraybamba, an impressive archeological site with terraced slopes that rise for several kilometers from the banks of the Caraybamba River to the top of the mountains. There is no other place like this on the Earth, and you will be one of the first to see it. Yet, very soon, it will become a major tourist attraction. We journey through charming Andean towns and see the locals dressed in their colorful, traditional outfits. We will go up and down winding road, see llamas and alpacas, and pass through the town of Chulucanas until reaching the impressive natural giant rocky formations in Puquio. Our picnic lunch will be eaten on our way, and in the afternoon we will stop at the Pampas Galeras Natural Reserve, with the largest population of vicuñas in the world. This animal possesses the finest wool in the world, and we will have the opportunity to get real close to them and take pictures. It is also possible to watch condors soaring in the sky, and most likely we will see eagles, falcons, Andean geese, small birds, and other animals like vizcachas. We continue our descent through towering mountains that flaunt all different colors and by bluish green lakes. At this point, the landscape changes dramatically from mountains to sand dunes crowned with gigantic cacti. Something impossible to forget.
Few places on earth where you can experience a twilight from the Andes down to the Coast. We finally reach the arid coastal plains and the Cantayoc Aqueducts as well as Las Agujas (first site of an observable Nazca Line). After that, it is on to our hotel and dinner at the best restaurant in the city of Nazca.

Also, we will stop by the Huacachina Oasis and marvel at its picture perfect dunes. Our next stop is a winery where they produce excellent wines and high quality pisco brandies.
